Depression Therapy in
Orange County & Riverside, CA

Depression is more than sadness — it's a heaviness that can make even small things feel impossible. Heidi Francine is a trauma-informed, EMDR trained Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist helping clients across Orange County and Riverside County find their way back to connection, meaning, and a life that feels worth living.

Depression Is Not a Weakness or a Choice

Depression is one of the most common and most misunderstood mental health conditions. It's not laziness. It's not ingratitude. It's not something you can simply "snap out of" with the right mindset. Depression is a real, complex condition with biological, psychological, and relational roots — and it is highly treatable.

At its core, depression often involves a profound disconnection — from yourself, from others, from the future, and from any sense that things can get better. This disconnection has physiological underpinnings. The nervous system plays a central role in how depression feels in the body — the exhaustion, the numbness, the heaviness, the absence of pleasure — and effective treatment needs to address it at that level.

Heidi's approach to depression combines evidence-based therapy with a deep understanding of how trauma, nervous system dysregulation, and unresolved pain contribute to depressive states — and how healing happens when all of these dimensions are addressed together.

Depression & the Nervous System

Polyvagal Theory describes a state called dorsal vagal shutdown — a nervous system response to overwhelming stress or threat that manifests as collapse, numbness, disconnection, and withdrawal. This is the physiological basis of much of what we experience as depression. Understanding this helps explain why depression feels so physical — and why treatment that works with the nervous system, not just the mind, is so important.

When Depression Has Roots in Trauma

Depression and trauma frequently co-occur. Unresolved loss, childhood wounds, relational trauma, and chronic stress can all contribute to or worsen depression. EMDR therapy is particularly effective for depression that has these deeper roots — addressing the underlying experiences rather than just managing surface symptoms.

What Depression Can Look and Feel Like

Depression presents differently for different people. Some feel profound sadness. Others feel nothing at all. Many experience it primarily in their body.

🌫️

Persistent low mood, emptiness, or hopelessness lasting most of the day, most days

😶

Loss of interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy — hobbies, relationships, activities

😴

Fatigue and low energy — feeling exhausted even without exertion

🧠

Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things

😔

Feelings of worthlessness, excessive guilt, or self-criticism

🛌

Sleep disturbances — sleeping too much, too little, or waking unrefreshed

🍽️

Changes in appetite or weight — eating significantly more or less than usual

🐢

Slowed thinking, movement, or speech — feeling like everything takes enormous effort

🔒

Social withdrawal — pulling away from friends, family, and activities

😠

Irritability or agitation — especially common in men and often overlooked as depression

🌑

Thoughts of death, hopelessness about the future, or feeling like a burden to others

Functioning outwardly while feeling empty inside — "smiling depression"

Treatment That Addresses Root Causes — Not Just Symptoms

Heidi's approach to depression goes beyond helping you feel a little better day to day. She works to understand why you're depressed — the unresolved experiences, nervous system patterns, and relational wounds that are contributing — and addresses them directly.

🧠 EMDR for Depression

EMDR is increasingly recognized as an effective treatment for depression — particularly depression connected to loss, trauma, or negative core beliefs. By reprocessing the experiences that created beliefs like "I am worthless" or "I don't deserve to be happy," EMDR can create lasting shifts in how clients feel about themselves and their future. Many clients experience relief through EMDR that years of talk therapy couldn't provide.

🫁 Nervous System Regulation

Drawing on Polyvagal Theory, Heidi helps clients understand the dorsal vagal shutdown state that underlies much of depression — and develop the nervous system resources to gradually move out of it. This isn't about forcing positivity. It's about gently rebuilding the physiological capacity for engagement, connection, and aliveness.

💭 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most well-researched treatments for depression. It helps clients identify and challenge the negative thought patterns that fuel and maintain depression — catastrophizing, all-or-nothing thinking, personalization, and the deeply held beliefs about self and world that depression creates. CBT also helps clients build behavioral patterns that support mood and engagement with life.

🌿 Trauma-Informed Care

All of Heidi's work is grounded in a trauma-informed approach — recognizing that depression rarely exists in isolation. Past experiences, relational wounds, chronic stress, and unprocessed grief all shape the depressive landscape. Heidi attends to the whole person and the full context of their life, not just the diagnostic label.

All Forms of Depression Are Welcome Here

Depression takes many forms. Heidi works with a wide range of depressive presentations.

Major Depression

Persistent low mood, loss of interest, and impaired functioning lasting two weeks or more. The most commonly diagnosed form of depression, and highly responsive to treatment.

Persistent Depressive Disorder

A lower-grade but chronic form of depression lasting two years or more. Often described as feeling like "this is just who I am" — but it is treatable and doesn't have to be permanent.

Trauma-Related Depression

Depression that has clear roots in past traumatic experiences, loss, or chronic stress. Often accompanied by PTSD symptoms and particularly responsive to EMDR therapy.

Postpartum Depression

Depression occurring after childbirth, affecting mothers and sometimes fathers. Characterized by overwhelming sadness, anxiety, exhaustion, and difficulty bonding — and very treatable with the right support.

Grief-Related Depression

Depression arising from significant loss — a loved one, a relationship, a job, an identity. When grief becomes complicated or prolonged, therapeutic support can help you move through it rather than getting stuck.

High-Functioning Depression

Maintaining responsibilities and appearances while privately struggling with emptiness, low motivation, and disconnection. Common and often unrecognized — sometimes called "smiling depression."

Depression Therapy — Frequently Asked Questions

Sadness is a normal human emotion that comes and goes in response to life events. Depression is persistent — it lasts weeks or months, affects your ability to function, and often has no clear external cause. If low mood, loss of interest, fatigue, or hopelessness have been present most days for two or more weeks, it's worth speaking with a therapist.

Yes — therapy is highly effective for depression, often as effective as medication for mild to moderate depression, and more durable in preventing relapse. Heidi uses evidence-based approaches including EMDR, CBT, and nervous system regulation that address the underlying roots of depression rather than just managing symptoms. Some clients benefit most from therapy alone, others from a combination of therapy and medication — Heidi can help you think through what makes sense for you.

Depression is often connected to unresolved loss, trauma, or deeply held negative beliefs about oneself — beliefs like 'I am worthless,' 'I am unlovable,' or 'Nothing will ever get better.' EMDR can identify and reprocess the experiences that created these beliefs, reducing their emotional charge and allowing more adaptive, realistic self-perceptions to take hold.

Depression often involves the dorsal vagal shutdown state described in Polyvagal Theory — a state of collapse, disconnection, and reduced engagement with life that the nervous system adopts when it has been overwhelmed for too long. Understanding this helps explain why depression feels so physical — the fatigue, heaviness, and numbness aren't 'in your head.' Heidi's nervous-system-informed approach works with this physiological dimension of depression.

It depends on the nature and severity of your depression. Many clients experience meaningful improvement in 8–16 sessions. Depression with deeper roots in trauma or long-standing patterns may take longer. Heidi will give you a realistic picture after your first session.
